The Advent Calendar, by Steven Croft is packed with codes and secrets, and invites readers to explore the deeper meanings of Christmas. This enthralling and touching story will be loved by both adults and children and is available from all good bookshops and through www.dltbooks.com.

Advent is recognized as the beginning of the Church Year, and is a time of expectation and preparation for the coming of Jesus in the four weeks leading up to Christmas Day. The word ‘Advent’ means ‘coming’ or ‘arrival’ in Latin. It begins on the first Sunday of December and ends on Christmas Eve.

Many people purchase Advent Calendars which have 24 doors to open during December, counting down to Christmas Day. Originally from Germany, modern advent calendars contain a chocolate for each day of Advent, but others – including the magic calendar in the story – contain pictures or scenes from the nativity.

During Advent it is also customary to arrange Advent Wreaths, made out of evergreen branches and leaves. The circular wreath and the evergreen branches are symbolic of God’s eternal love for us. The four outer candles on a wreath mark the four Sundays leading up to Christmas Day. The colours of these candles can vary with tradition, but there are usually three purple candles and one pink candle, lit on the third Sunday of Advent. The centre candle is white and is known as the Christ Candle. This candle is traditionally lit on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day.
